Description: "Since 1969, the Center for Chicano Studies at UCSB
has served as the campus ORU for sponsored research in Chicana/Chicano Studies.
Because the Center's origins were intricately bound to the larger Chicano student
movement concerned with questions of community education and Chicano/Latino underrepresentation
among undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty at the University of California, the mandate
of the Center has traditionally embraced the development of programs aimed at addressing these concerns.
Hence, the Center evolved into a unit that sought to develop faculty research initiatives in Chicana/o
Studies and participate in the recruitment and retention of Chicano/Latino faculty,
graduate students, and undergraduates as well as work with the larger Chicano/Latino community
in the local area. To date, the Center for Chicano Studies is one of only two ORU's in the University of California
system devoted to these goals."

Chicano/Latino Research Center
Founded: 1990.
Institutional Coordination: University of California, Santa Cruz
Description: "Located at Casa Latina and founded in 1992, the Chicano/Latino Research Center engages
in cross-border (re)conceptualization and research. Our interdisciplinary work spans empirical social scientific
with interpretative approaches within cultural studies and the humanities. Given our location in California, literally
in the borderlands between the first and third worlds, we study the local changing demographic and cultural panorama
which mainly include people of indigenous, Mexican, and Central American origin who have links to other regions in
las Americas. We historicize and theorize about constructions of identity and social formations, particularly
transformations of working class, ethnic, and gendered subjectivities in California's fin del siglo multiethnic society.
We study how subjects negotiate complex lives in the context of economic restructuring, globalization and neoliberal
policies in the U.S. and Latin America, which create new forms of impoverishment and disentitlement. Our approach
also includes interpreting how the nation-state is being redefined through contestation of exclusionary practices by
social movements or cultural expressions which may have transnational ties.
We have a history of conferences and workshops sponsored in conjunction with Mexican universities (UAM, UNAM),
research centers (COLEF, Tijuana), and scholars. We have three edited volumes forthcoming which emerged out of
binational conferences sponsored by our clusters.
Currently there are nine research clusters which work on various aspects of this cross-border perspective".
